Child Travel Consent Information

A Child Travel Consent form, also referred to as a travel permission letter, is a document that is used to allow a minor child to travel:

  • With a group
  • With a friend or family member
  • Alone
  • With only one parent who shares custody
  • Abroad via bus, plane, train, or ship

This form may be used for minor children and youths who are travelling from Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, or Wales.

How does consent work for children of parents with shared custody/guardianship?

If you share custody of your child with another parent or guardian and are travelling with your child, you will need to get permission from the other party before leaving. Your travel permission letter will include information about the second parent or guardian, as well as their signature to indicate that they are aware that the child is travelling.

If you are a parent of and have a different family name than the travelling child, it is recommended that you also carry documentation that shows proof of the relationship. This could include a record of birth, adoption decree, or a proof of relationship letter.

What travel details should be in a travel permission letter?

To complete your Child Travel Consent form, you will need to know

  • the dates of travel and return;
  • where the child will be travelling to;
  • where the child will be staying;
  • and who they will be travelling with.

You should also note if your child will be carrying a passport and if they have any specific medical needs or allergies.

Does a Child Travel Consent form need to be notarised?

By having your travel permission letter notarised, you are guaranteeing the authenticity of the document. It is recommended that you have your form notarised, especially if the minor child will be travelling internationally.

Do I need a Child Medical Consent?

A Child Medical Consent form will temporarily allow a guardian or parent to make medical decisions on your behalf for the youth in their care while travelling.

A travel permission letter will not allow another party to make medical choices for your child, so it is recommended that you also create a Child Medical Consent in case of a medical emergency while your child is away.
